Vegetarian Chicken Cutlets?? No Thanks.

Post by AustynKersey »

In an effort to try to cut back on the meat I bought some vegetarian chicken cutlets. Let just say I took one smell and one nibble and it made me sick. Ugh =(

As with animal meat, mockmeats are going to taste terrible or great depending on the quality of the product. Try more!

Yep. Can you tell us what brand you bought?
Try to read some reviews online. Some are terrible (which is unfortunate), while some brands are much better quality.

Beyond meat has been touted as one of the best. Although, of course, like anything you have to prepare it correctly.

How did you prepare the product?
If you took a nibble of raw meat, that wouldn't be a great experience either. Or so I would imagine.

Also, try putting it IN something, like a tortilla along with other things. And don't forget the sriracha.

Don't completely write off home made mock meat, even if your not the best cook. I remember nibbling on some tofu nuggets that reminded me of chicken schnitzel, except tiny. My omnivore friends rejected that claim but still came back for seconds xD. If you want a proper recipe, I have not tried this one http://thevedge.org/2013/02/tofu-popcor ... uten-free/

otherwise what I done.

Ingredients
Firm tofu (also works with less firm variety's)
Thickener of choice (breadcrumbs, or mashed beans, flour may even work)
Bread crumbs or vegan batter
(Vegan) chicken salt, veggie stock, or spice of choice.

Method

Mash the tofu, as you would a potato.

Mix in flavouring (try not to over do it). If you need the "meat" to be thicker add some thickener.

Use a table spoon to get a consistent amount of tofu in each nugget, work it with your hands to get a nugget looking shape.

Cover the nugget in bread crumbs, some vegan milk may be needed if the bread crumbs will not stick to the tofu, but I never had to do this, tofu is sticky enough.

It go's with out saying that you sit the nuggets aside when you make the other's.

Fry in pan over high heat. It's a fine, fine line between cooked and burnt or bake in oven at medium heat.

Depending on your use of oil, it may be best to place the nuggets on a paper towel.

Enjoy!!!

Can you shoot a cooking video making this? It might be good to see the mixing and battering process.

Intuitively, I'd worry it would fall apart. So, consistency must be very important here.

Sounds seriously intriguing though!
