Can you tell me a bit about what you ate before and after going vegan? It sounds pretty counterintuitive to me. Did you like vegan food that much that you ate a lot of it?
It seems to me that it's much easier to loose weight then gain, since you're generally relying more on fruits and vegetables, while meat, eggs and cheese have many calories relative to it's size. I myself lost some pounds, while eating more than I did before (although probably not in calories, not sure).
I like to use myself as an example, most people switch to a vegan diet to loose weight but;
I have always been under weight and tall for a female & searched 21 years of my life to find a way to gain weight.
My diet consisted heavily of red meats and dairy, I was under the false impression that these foods would make me gain weight like they did for most everyone else.
The more meat I ate the more sick and thin I was. Also no one took my seriously when I would complain about being under weight or too thin, I always got the response "You are lucky, you don't realize how good you have it" ... (they didn't realize how sick I was)
Then I watched earthlings and went vegan over night...
I gained 10lbs with in a week!
I started eating more fruits and vegetables, tofu, beans, legumes, seeds, nuts and mushrooms, and good oils...
I believe I have a fast metabolism also my cholesterol levels as an omnivore where actually in the low range...
So I may have a predisposition to low cholesterol which there is no research on..
Mind you I am still under weight for my height.. 5'9 108lbs.. But I am not a stick anymore either!
Everybody's body is different!
