Re: Hi from a non vegan
Thanks to all. Teo’s first post was very non-alienating and, while he speaks better English than some native speakers, it is his second language and there are cultural differences in directness and other things that can be misunderstood when people are part of a different tradition but speaking your language.
Teo regarding your video I had to laugh about the useless language comment. All languages were equally useful but now with international travel and internet those of us born in an English or Chinese speaking country are lucky.
I need to look into the methionine thing more. Apart from your comment and video I haven’t heard of that before.
As far as views on appropriateness of giving references in an introduction talking about me we can agree to disagree.
Sorry but without hunting down a particular you tube I can’t assist with the hormone thing. Some vegan lady who thought she might be better off on meat said something about having a hormonal imbalance since she became vegan. She said she felt great for a year but then started having problems. I wasn’t looking for an answer to everything I read in the first response to my introduction. I was just explaining what I had been looking at and why I was here.
You are right about gassing pigs. I only heard about that very recently. I doubt it is common knowledge.

Oh, thank you! I've put a lot of effort into learning it.John wrote:while he speaks better English than some native speakers
Well, thanks for watching it!John wrote:Teo regarding your video
Well, I don't think so.John wrote:All languages were equally useful
Everybody would probably agree not all programming languages are equally useful. I've made my own programming language, you can see some example programs in it (the ".aec" files) along with their 32-bit Windows executable files here. Is it as useful as C or JavaScript is? Of course not. Expressing many common algorithms in it is rather difficult, and it also doesn't have quality infrastructure associated with it.
And the same is probably true for human languages. A language needs to be refined to be useful for discussing matters of hard sciences in it, it's just that most linguists don't get it. If two computer scientists are discussing computer science in Latin, they will have a much harder time understanding each other than if they were doing that in English. Latin just isn't refined for that.
And I don't think it's just because of the Internet that English and Chinese are more useful than smaller languages. If you are in Ireland, would you rather know Irish or English? If you are in Croatia, would you rather know Istriot (a Romance language native to Croatia, spoken today by a few hundreds of people in remote villages) or Croatian?
Well, like I've said, it's the reason why not all protein is good. Protein found in milk and in sesame seeds causes heart disease in humans. And it's not, like gluten, that it causes health issues in a small minority of humans, it raises low-density cholesterol in all humans.John wrote:I need to look into the methionine thing more.
There is large financial incentive to keep people ignorant of those things.John wrote:Apart from your comment and video I haven’t heard of that before.
Well, yes, I think most of the people are willfully ignorant about those things. And the idea that we still haven't found the nicest way to die seems ridiculous to them.John wrote:You are right about gassing pigs. I only heard about that very recently. I doubt it is common knowledge.
