Hi folks
I recently became vegan again after backsliding for about 10 years. I believe I was led back to it from my interest in moral philosophy. I don't have any vegan friends and this looks like a cool community.

Hey. I'm glad you came back to veganism and I hope you're better health and conscious wise for it.PunkRockVegan wrote: βThu Jun 04, 2020 12:58 pm I recently became vegan again after backsliding for about 10 years. Now, I'm not nearly as knowledgable as some of the other members here, so I tend to read debates rather than participate usually so you likely won't see me a lot there, but I think one thing which might be cool is I'm into a fair amount of metal music, as well as some punk rock music, so if you have an interest in metal then maybe we could share some music with each other?
Which are some of your favourite bands? And, do you like any metal?
I personally like some metal on the more punk side like Breach's final two albums, and the Deeper Than Sky album by Vhol which is an interesting mix of black metal, punk, and progressive music. So those are a couple examples of more punk like music I enjoy.

Re: Hi folks
A couple things:
- Got into Sam Harris while transitioning from a christian to an atheist. This led me to seek out other people talking about morality.
- Borrowed Letters from a Stoic by Seneca from my brother and got into Stoicism. This led to my interest in other philosophies like Epicureanism, Existentialism, Nihilism, Absurdism, Utilitarianism, etc.
- I'm currently fascinated by Arthur Schopenhauer. There's no evidence he was a vegetarian but he seemed to be empathetic towards animals.

Propagandhi, Rise Against, Bad Religion, Strung Out are a few of my favorites. I do like some metal, I was listening to Dragonforce last night. I also like Darkest Hour, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage.Dream Sphere wrote: βThu Jun 04, 2020 2:11 pmWhich are some of your favourite bands? Cool, I think I've heard the names of all those bands before, but even the ones I'm most familiar with (except DragonForce) I only know a few songs and those are Rise Against, and Shadows Fall. With SF the main song I know is one of their most popular ones, "The Light That Blinds" and for RA I know "Prayer of the Refugee", "Satellite", "Savior" and maybe a couple others that I can't recall the names of.PunkRockVegan wrote: βFri Jun 05, 2020 11:45 amPropagandhi, Rise Against, Bad Religion, Strung Out are a few of my favorites. DragonForce however were the 3rd metal band I ever obsessed over, lol, and I still like most of their stuff to this day. If you haven't checked out their earliest stuff like the song "Valley of the Damned", I'd recommend it, as well as their most recent album Extreme Power Metal is actually one of their best too, favourite song from that is probably the ridiculous/fun titled "Cosmic Power of the Infinite Shred Machine". Also, I'd recommend checking out the band Ascension's two songs "Somewhere Back in Time" and "Pages of Gold" as they have a pretty similar style to DF. In fact their guitarist Fraser Edwards just released his 2nd solo album yesterday and they had a lead single on that album called "Stop Saying We Sound Like Dragonforce" which is really tongue-in-cheek because it sounds more like them than a lot of Ascension's music and references various DF song titles along with other lyrical jokes.
Anyways, I do really recall liking what I've heard from Rise Against, so what would you recommend for me to check out further from them? And of any other bands you like including the others you mentioned, what're a couple other songs you think I might like?
Oh, and one final recommendation for now is the power metal band Blind Guardian which is probably my fav power metal band. They're technically the same genre as DF but not as hectic/over-the-top, so I think you could like them. I would recommend BG's songs "Time What Is Time", "Theatre of Pain", "Imaginations From the Other Side" and "Turn the Page" to start. I'd recommend trying "Turn the Page" first as it has a kinda celtic/folk rock feel that's similar to some kinds of punk music.
Feel free to reply before you've heard all/any of the songs I recommended, and I realize I recommended like 9 songs which is about an album's worth, which is a lot in terms of recommendations, so don't feel like you have to ever listen to all of it if it seems uninteresting at any point, I'd prefer to try and find stuff that you want to spend the time to listen to.

Re: Hi folks
Welcome Punkrockvegan,
I've been listening a bit to Propagandhi. Potemkin City Limits is a great song with powerful lyrics. Are the other bands you mentioned also vegan bands?
