What do you think about the police?

Post by Cloppy »

So recently since the George Floyd incident a lot of people have been showing hate towards the police in general even though the officer who murdered Mr. Floyd got in jail for it and totally deserve it.

Personally my opinion on the police is while there are bad police officers, I believe they only represent a very small minority of all police officers and that overall they do way more good than bad. I also think racist cops are mostly a myth these days.

There has been many cases of white people being treated unfairly by the police or even murdered, those usually don't make the news. But when it's a black man who was treated unfairly or killed, it makes the news and people are quick to say they got treated unfairly or killed simply for being black. I don't really think so.

I think a world without the police would be a problem because people will not be able to get help when they are in trouble. Without cops if someone wanted to murder someone or rape them, they can do so without getting stopped. Or in the case where someone wants to break into your house to kill or rape you, you can't call the police to come and get them arrested. So what will prevent them from continuing?

Conclusion: Most cops are good and are here to protect the people and save their lives and without them a lot of people would get hurt or killed.

This question is mostly US specific but also about the police overall.

I've lived in a bunch of countries and from what I've seen, heard, and experienced myself, the U.S. police is among the worst in the developed world. Cutting funding is clearly not the solution. Increased training, more thorough selection, and a complete change in culture will cost a bit of cash, especially in the beginning. Furthermore, I'd like to see the admission age raised to at least 25 years of age.

A lot of people reacted to an event a few years ago when some Swedish cops on vacation in NY took care of a situation on the subway. I think the American cops should study how good other countries' police forces can be at diffusing situations rather than escalating them.

I agree with Jebus that we're being too hasty in cutting funding; It's an example of a faith-based policy, it seems like a good idea on paper given the issue, but we have no idea what the consequences are gonna be. Will they be good? Possibly (though not very likely), but we can't know for sure until it's been tested, and we haven't even considered other possibilities. Jebus has good suggestions, but I haven't seen many other people propose similar things.

As to your question, I don't hate most cops, generally I think they're people just trying to survive like pretty much the rest of us. I disagree with some of the laws they uphold, but it isn't necessarily their fault for what the government pretty much forces them to do (like the Soldiers who go fought in the Iraq War).

I'm not sure if this 'All Cops Are Bastards' mentality is very useful either; I think it'd be better if we don't alienate them and instead try to fix the institution.

Honestly I would say American cops are very good at what they're doing. In the country that has the 3rd largest population in the world, occasional incidents like that are bound to happen.

Why wouldn't you be honest? Should we assume that you are being dishonest whenever you don't start a sentence with "honestly"?

Based on what? Compared to what other wealthy nations?

Sorry for the confusion. I'm always honest I don't know why I even said that...

You can't really compare nations when it comes to this because there are many things to take into consideration like how the government operates, the culture, the people, population, etc. All I'm saying is the police in America does a good jobs and most cops are not bad. You would also have to take in consideration that gun laws in the US are less strict than in most countries. So it would be more likely for someone to have a firearm on them. The way the police operates in America is suitable for that country. You can't take the police in Europe and send them to America operating the same way they did in Europe for example.

Well, like probably everybody on this forum knows, I think police are basically useless. Police generally doesn't actively try to prevent crime, it generally only comes after a crime has already happened. Police nearly always comes after a mentally ill person has already murdered someone, not before that so that they can prevent it. And then they put that mentally ill person into a jail. Jail is not a place where that mentally ill person will become sane, jail is a place from which they will return with even more psychological problems that made them murder in the first place. Some policies against crime make some sense, such as gun control (let's act before that happens) or death penalty (let's remove the murderers from society forever), though I am not sure whether they are based on evidence. But to me it seems like the idea that police, the way it's done today, somehow protects us from the crime, can be rejected a-priori. That's basically the point I was making in this video.

I suggest not responding to Teo, since in all likelihood he's going to derail the thread into an idiotic discussion as to why we should legalize murder.
