Yeah, social pressure is a powerful thing with widely accepted bad ideas. I'd just draw a parallel distinction to biblical times, of tribal societies, not actually wanting to come across as absolving them completely with a utility argument because then people will think you can use simple utility arguments to defend anything like taking black people as slaves out of africa for their ancestors to enjoy an unfair economic relationship today. It's a matter of not diminishing the actions of the people who resisted such things and the inspiring history of slave rebellions, etc.
