Mr friend sent me this:

Sounds like yellow journalism.

Partially true, because bananas are genetically identical. It happened before, although "extinction" is overstating it. Gros Michel still exist and are cultivated, just not as widely as before.

However, if it happens, they'd just be replaced by another cultivar (maybe even a more delicious one), you'd probably just notice the taste change slightly (or might not even notice).

Genetic modification might also step in to create resistance, although consumer resistance to GM tech may make that harder to pass on the market than using another conventional variety.

Another reason we should have GMOs.

Hey brimstone, I saw this article that says that Fukushima and Chernobyl 6000 are still radioactive:
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/09/04/fukushima-radiation.aspx
Is this accurate (hate to bother you)
eta- actually, better yet, just give me a reputable online source.

Nothing on Mercola is credible (there may be some stopped clock articles, but it's garbage).

The sites are radioactive, but not dangerously so for a visit. EVERYWHERE is radioactive with natural background radiation. These sites are just a little higher unless you get very close. You wouldn't want to live there, but a few miles away is fine.
It's like a high altitude plane ride or a chest x-ray.

There are lots of videos of people visiting there (and goofing around, lots of yellow journalism and making is sound more scary than it is), and there are people who live there (although not right next to the old reactor).
As long as you don't eat any dirt, you'll be fine.

People still work near by, doing maintenance and cleanup. The site was still producing power something like a couple decades after the accident.

These things just aren't that big of a deal. And the only reason Chernobyl was such a mess was due to the bad reactor design and lack of a shell. Something like that couldn't happen today. Fukushima was pretty small.

Here's a comparison:

So, while the sites still contain radioactivity, it's safe to pop in for a little while to check it out, and to study the area? Maybe I'll go there one day, if the area is still a ghost town.

So where is all this Chernobyl is dangerous nonsense coming from? What's it to 'em, y'know?
I guess people get turned off by the name.

All we need then, is just a well-designed, well maintenance reactor for nuclear power, and we should be fine.

Gee, thanks man! Do you also have a good source on nucular power, so i don't have to keep asking questions?

Yes. There are tours that will take you there. They go within a few hundred meters of the plant as I understand it.

Initially, from the oil industry. Nuclear was competition for them, and fear-mongering over the supposed dangers keeps them in business. Solar and wind are not serious threats.

Now there are hapless dupes who think they're environmentalists (in reality they are the opposite) carrying the torch of nuclear fear mongering all by themselves, bouncing the dogma back and forth in their echo chambers then regurgitating it onto the rest of the population with their protests and other bullshit.

Even the current ones are fine. Incidents like Fukushima aren't really a big real. So few people die because of these things, it's the safest form of power we have.

These are hard to estimate, but we have a lot of people falling off roofs installing solar panels, and dying from silicosis due to mining and manufacturing (people die mining Uranium too, but much less is required and we have a lot of 'free' uranium in nuclear weapons to use).

There are also designs that are literally meltdown proof, even without power. They can reach cold shutdown without any backup generators.

Poe's The Raven

No real point for putting it here. Just an excellent poem by an author I respect immensely. (The Bells is also a good one, but only if you realize it is not a "happy" poem, but a reflection of the author's slow descent into madness.)

I've went back and edited that script to my video, and I think I've improved it 10 fold. I'm gonna have to redo a lot of the voice work but that's not an issue. It's actually pretty fun doing this, but I don't have a lot of time on my hands these days. I've learned a lot about GMOs and Nuclear power from doing this, and when I get the editing program I need, I think this video will be decent.

Holy shit, that cover photo. That's hilarious. I actually suspected it was a parody account for a second. Oh my god. Why. How did we elect a person as President of the United States who talks like that? Seriously.
