So, I am at a crossroads here. Where I live we have a huge infestation of an invasive stink bug species. They are damaging crops and just generally a smelly nuisance. It has no predators here, whats the proper procedure for dealing with an invasive species in general. to kill or not to kill?

Are there any none-lethal deterrents? How did they get into the area?

I don't envy you this moral dilemma.

Whichever way you go, there are valid arguments.

Is it noble to defend the native environment (like defending another human being) by any means? Maybe.
Is it noble to abstain from harming another organism no matter what? Maybe.


There are black and white issues, like animal agriculture- it's wrong from every angle you look at it.
Then there are the gray areas...

As cliche as it is, I'd say to follow your heart. Which is the lesser of the evils?
I wouldn't judge you for it, whichever way you went, since there's no clear course of action, and for lack of that you're doing what you believe is best.

That said:

For some insects, there are chemicals that will prevent their eggs from hatching or developing properly.
But I wouldn't bank on a lon-lethal solution being available and effective. You may have to make a judgement call.
