Tipping is an American custom, but a lot of people don't really approve of it. I personally don't mind needing to tip, and I usually tip about 40%.
Some people don't like tipping because the bosses get to pay the waiters and waitresses less, which may or may not be a valid concern.
Thoughts?

Re: Tipping
Tipping is not the norm where I live. I would do it if I visited the states, but I wouldn't like to. I don't think tipping should be a tolerated excuse to underpay workers. It also seems discriminatory (attractive people earn more).

I agree with miniboes.
Red, have you seen the Adam Ruins Everything segment on tipping? If so, what did you think?

Re: Tipping
Might be more effective to abolish tipping and replace it with a fixed service charge.

Re: Tipping
40% seems very high. It could make sense to give a big tip if you're having constantly refilled water and a side salad you requested off-menu modifications to and which you munch on for two hours while using their wifi. I'm pretty sure I've tipped 100% before.
But otherwise 15%-20% is the norm unless the server went above and beyond, in which case 25% is considered appropriate for excellent service.
Over-paying somebody isn't charity. They have to pay taxes on that. If you want to be generous donating to an actual charity makes more sense.
That all said, yes tipping is archaic and a terrible practice that needs to be abolished. It makes sense to simply *not patronize* restaurants that aren't paying their serving staff minimum wage. A low wage is one thing, but an unreliable wage is something entirely different.

@Lay Vegan @miniboes I don't disagree.
@Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz It was good, despite the crappy humour. I just want to see if there are any benefits to tipping.

Constant refill of water? She might be too fucking busy.brimstoneSalad wrote:It could make sense to give a big tip if you're having constantly refilled water and a side salad you requested off-menu modifications to and which you munch on for two hours while using their wifi.
Well what if I tip more so more money goes towards taxes so the government can use it for social programs and such?brimstoneSalad wrote:Over-paying somebody isn't charity. They have to pay taxes on that. If you want to be generous donating to an actual charity makes more sense.

Re: Tipping
how does tipping result in more taxes being paid?
public spending (unfortunately, and especially in the US) isn't perfectly attuned to increasing global welfare, your money is indeed better spent on an effective charity.

Re: Tipping
huh, i wouldn't tips to be taxed, that seems quite complicated to regulate
but yeah, the fact that some percentage of what you tip ends up being spent in public programmes doesn't really weigh up to how much of it the person you tipped it to is likely to waste

Well what if I'm so nationalistic that I just want to find ways to go above and beyond the normal taxation?miniboes wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2019 8:31 pm huh, i wouldn't tips to be taxed, that seems quite complicated to regulate
