I'm a moderator on a secondhand items gifting site called Freegle in the UK and Freecycle in the US. So I've set up a facebook group for vegan feedback and the reasons below. I've also started a wiki page on Free Animal Postings which would be cool if people wanted to help write.
-
Vegans of Freegle
This is a group for encouraging use of free secondhand item sites for the environment, and connecting with your neighbors.
As well as discussing grey area situations for animal protection.
And finally to encourage vegans to become moderators of groups to help maintain the site, ensure best gifting practices and be able to vote on site wide rules. This is a big time commitment, so please only consider this role if you are highly motivated.
Here are some example guidelines for animal postings on the website:
• For Moderators - Tips for groups that allow pet posts
• For Members - Using Freecycle for placing pets
• Local Chapter - Custom Rules
And we can discuss below what we think would make for minimal and ideal best practices, here's a start:
-
Animal Post Guidelines
Minimum
1) No illegal animals.
2) No animals to be used for breeding purposes.
3) No exotic animal that requires special knowledge or care to keep them healthy unless it's going to someone who has extensive experience with them.
4) Single animals only. Any more than one or frequent posting should be warned or reported to inspectors for potential cruel conditions.
5) You must visit the home of the adopter before consenting to the adoption.
6) No wanteds or offers for non-insect animals to be used as feeder food.
Ideal
7) No pet posts for animals which can be taken in by a local Rescue Centre.
-
As for why we would allow animal postings at all, here are some examples we think are important:
• Rescue battery-chickens who are mended back to health and the carer would like others with large gardens to be able to enjoy these feral beasts so they can continue to rescue more.
• Zebrafish or sea-monkeys which naturally only occupy small pools of water. If the previous owner for example needs to leave the country. Especially good for children in developing an appreciation for animal life.
