Contacting Political Representatives

Post by Red »

I was always daunted by the notion of talking with representatives, but I've actually been thinking about this more. I talked with my local State Assemblyman about nuclear energy a coon's age ago and I don't really remember what came of it.

Anyway, I've been thinking of making more of a habit of talking with my representatives about issues, with a phone call or email every week or so.

I'm more familiar with issues the federal government has control over, but some of these things are State level issues too.

I've been planning on contacting them about the following things, in no particular order:
  • Nuclear Energy and just better climate policies
  • Ending agricultural subsidies
  • Pushing more free or affordable STEM, Med School, and Trade school education
  • Keeping support for the National Popular Vote Bill (New York has already signed off on it, but it doesn't hurt to make sure they understand we want them to keep it
  • Ending tariffs and opening up trade with more countries
  • Drug decriminalization
  • More healthcare (obviously)
  • Educational programs about the issues with meat consumption, and other educational programs to encourage more green and healthier behaviors
  • Push against GMO labeling
  • UBI
Is it worth talking to your representatives a lot? I consider it an important part of trying to make a difference, and since it's easy it's something more people should be doing (including those too young to vote).

I think as long as you contact a variety of them so the same one doesn't get to know you *too* well, it would be a pretty good use of time.

Does the Good Food Institute have any action alerts?

Why would that be a problem? Would they be like 'Ugh this fucking asshole again' when I call for the 6th time in one day? Would they start ignoring my calls after that?

I need to look into who to talk to about these issues. Although hopefully Obamacare isn't repealed since Republicans cheated on the newest court appointment, it's gonna be hard to be pushing for progressive policies for the next 30-40 years.
